A fake pregnancy, fake cancer, a U.S. Marshal, and one woman framed for crimes she didn’t commit. Every time I thought I’d figured it out, I was wrong.

You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up

  • Michelle Hadley spent 88 days in jail after police accused her of sending death threats and posting fake Craigslist “rape fantasy” ads. They later discovered she had been framed.
  • The woman who claimed she was the victim, Angela Connell, was eventually exposed for faking a pregnancy and writing the threatening emails herself to frame Michelle.
  • Federal investigators later concluded that Angela’s husband—U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz—helped orchestrate the entire scheme. He was later sentenced to more than 10 years in federal prison.

Director’s Note: This Netflix true-crime documentary unfolds like a psychological thriller. Rather than simply recounting the investigation, it slowly peels back layers of deception, making you constantly question who is manipulating whom.

Other Unique Stuff

  • Detectives eventually discovered that many of the threatening emails had actually been created by the very person claiming to be terrorized.
  • The Craigslist “rape fantasy” advertisements brought real strangers to Angela’s home, making the case seem even more believable to investigators.
  • As federal investigators became involved, the story shifted from a revenge case into a conspiracy involving a federal law enforcement officer.

Wrap Up:

This is one of the most unbelievable wrongful-accusation documentaries I’ve seen in years. If you enjoy true crime with constant twists that make you rethink everything, “A Toxic Love Story” is absolutely worth staying up late for like I did.
