You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up
- Richard Kuklinski claimed he murdered more than 100 people over three decades while living a completely normal suburban family life in New Jersey. Investigators have never confirmed that number. Many believe he exaggerated at least some of his claims.
- He said he earned the nickname “The Iceman” because he froze one victim’s body for nearly two years before dumping it so police would miscalculate the time of death. Parts of that story have been disputed, but it became his most famous claim.
- Kuklinski matter-of-factly describes killing people with guns, knives, cyanide, crossbows, poison, and his bare hands with almost no emotion. It’s hard to believe you’re listening to a real person.

Director’s Note: These HBO documentaries consist almost entirely of extended prison interviews with Richard Kuklinski. Instead of flashy reenactments, the films let Kuklinski tell his own story while investigators and experts help provide context for his claims.

- Kuklinski describes growing up in an extremely violent household where he says abuse became so common that he stopped feeling fear at an early age.
- The second HBO interview was filmed nearly a decade after the first, giving viewers a rare chance to compare how Kuklinski’s stories and demeanor changed over time.
Wrap Up:
I found this less interesting as a true crime mystery than as a psychological study. Whether you believe every word Kuklinski says or not, it’s impossible to look away once he starts talking.
