Hanging by a Wire

Two steel cables snap and eight people hang 900 feet above a rocky gorge in the Himilayas.

And the last cable is fraying.

I found out about this one on The Hollywood Reporter.

Trailer for “Hanging by a Wire”

I couldn’t find a true trailer, but I did find this — Meet the Artist 2026: Mohammed Ali Naqvi on “Hanging by a Wire”:

You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up

  • Two of the cable car’s three steel cables snapped, leaving 6 schoolboys and 2 adults dangling 900 feet above a Himalayan gorge for 14 hours.
  • Local police didn’t respond fast enough. Villagers livestreamed the crisis on TikTok and Instagram. The social media pressure forced the government to act.
  • A man nicknamed the “sky pirate,” Sahib Khan, volunteered to zipline across the gorge toward the swinging car while it twisted in high winds.
  • Rescue hero Muhammad Ali Swati, a bodybuilder and zipline expert, built an improvised pulley system overnight. They pulled the final children to safety just before the last cable failed.

Ratings:

  • My Rating: 90/100
  • IMDB Rating: 7.8/10

Genre: Documentary, Thriller

Director’s Note: Directed by Mohammed Ali Naqvi. He leans into tension without turning this into disaster spectacle. The focus stays on the kids, the rescuers, and the power of ordinary people forcing action through social media.

Release Date: Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2026.

My Review of “Hanging by a Wire”

The Setup

On a normal morning in August 2023, six schoolboys and two adults boarded a cable car in Pakistan’s Battagram district. Midway across a deep gorge, two cables snapped. For 14 hours, they dangled 900 feet above rocks and a rushing river.

The film moves minute by minute. You feel the heat. The wind. The fear inside that small metal box.

More Highlights from the Doc

  • The stranded passengers were mostly students commuting to school. For them, cable cars are normal daily transport.
  • Military helicopters tried to hover near the car. But, rotor wash made the dangling cabin swing wildly. At one point, rescuers had to abort midair attempts.
  • Nightfall made everything worse. There was no proper lighting. Rescuers worked with headlamps and ropes in near darkness.
  • Parents gathered on the cliffs, watching their children hang in the sky for hours. The film cuts between the boys inside the car and the panic on the ground.
  • The documentary uses reenactments to show what couldn’t be filmed in real time, especially the late-night pulley rescue.

Cameos – Lesser-Known Details from the Doc

  • Sahib Khan, the “sky pirate,” had done risky cable crossings before, but never under global media attention. After the rescue, he became a national hero.
  • Muhammad Ali Swati wasn’t part of an official rescue unit. He was known locally for strength competitions and zipline work. He stepped up when the government’s response stalled.
  • The livestreams from villagers triggered international news coverage within hours. This reportedly pressured Pakistani officials to deploy elite rescue teams.

Wrap Up

“Hanging by a Wire” is a survival thriller powered by cell phones and courage. If you like stories where regular people step up when systems fail, this one will stay with you.
