- By the mid-1960s, Johnny Cash was so addicted to amphetamines and pills that he was arrested multiple times, nearly destroyed his marriage, and watched his career collapse before June Carter helped him rebuild his life.
- In 1968, Cash walked into California’s Folsom State Prison and recorded a live album in front of hundreds of inmates. It became one of the greatest comeback albums in music history and turned him back into a superstar.
- More than four decades after his first hit, Cash recorded “Hurt.” Many younger listeners assumed it was his song—even though it was originally written by Nine Inch Nails. Even songwriter Trent Reznor later admitted the song felt like it belonged to Cash.
