The Compleat Beatles

This might be the best Beatles documentary most people have never seen. It’s unauthorized, loaded with rare interviews, and basically vanished after Paul McCartney bought the negative and pulled it from circulation.

Shout-out to Harrison Lazarus for surfacing this New York Times piece, which helped explain why it became such a cult object.

You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up

  • This whole thing was not even supposed to be a full movie at first. It began as a short companion doc for a Beatles publishing project, then ballooned into a four-hour rough cut before becoming a feature-length documentary.
  • Apple tried to stop the doc from coming out. The Beatles’ company sued, but the filmmakers had song rights tied to the publishing project, so the doc still got released.
  • The movie became such a hit on home video that it reportedly became the best-selling full-length VHS music video until Michael Jackson’s “The Making of Thriller” came along.

Watch “The Compleat Beatles”

You can watch “The Compleat Beatles” at the Internet Archive. Since this doc has been hard to find legally for years, availability can be spotty, and fans have often had to hunt down old VHS or LaserDisc copies.

Ratings:

  • My Rating: 92/100
  • IMDb Rating: 8.2/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes: 97/100 (Audience); not yet rated (Critics)

Director’s Note: Patrick Montgomery directed this one, and David Silver wrote it. What I like most is that the doc comes from outside the official Beatles machine.

Release Date: 1982. It later became a hit on home video and even aired on PBS.

Other Unique Stuff

  • The Beatles themselves didn’t participate in new interviews, which actually makes the film feel more objective—more like an explanation of the band than their own polished version of events.
  • It became a massive VHS hit before getting a theatrical release, then later found a second life on PBS pledge drives—an unusual path that helped build its cult following.
  • Paul McCartney later bought the negative from the doc’s owner and took it off the market because he wanted the spotlight on “The Beatles Anthology.”
