You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up

  • Nick Cave and Warren Ellis perform songs from “Ghosteen” and “Carnage” live for the first time. It turned music born during grief and the COVID lockdown into an intimate performance.
  • The entire doc was shot in spring 2021, before the pair’s first UK tour after the pandemic. It captured them creating in an almost empty world while theaters and concert halls were still largely closed.

Director’s Note: Andrew Dominik reunites with Nick Cave after directing the remarkable “One More Time With Feeling” (2016). Dominik builds a visually stunning concert film where performances, conversations, and behind-the-scenes moments flow together into one continuous experience.

Other Unique Stuff

  • The doc was shot almost entirely during rehearsals instead of public concerts, giving every performance a quiet, intimate feel.
  • Many of the visual effects were created with lighting, smoke, mirrors, and camera movement instead of heavy digital effects.
  • Dominik intentionally avoided narration and title cards, allowing the music itself to carry the emotional story.

Wrap Up:

“This Much I Know To Be True” is one of the most beautiful music documentaries I’ve seen in years. Even if you aren’t already a Nick Cave fan, it’s a moving look at how friendship and creativity can survive enormous loss.
