Queen of Chess

Imagine being raised for one purpose, to beat the greatest chess player who ever lived, and then actually doing it.

Tim Ferriss mentioned he’s watching this in his 5-Bullet Friday newsletter.

You Can’t Make This Sh!t Up

  • At age 17, Judit Polgár entered the 1994 Linares super-tournament, the strongest event in the world. She finishes ahead of former world champion Anatoly Karpov, and beats multiple top-10 players as the only woman in the field.
  • In that same tournament, Garry Kasparov illegally picks up a piece and puts it back against Judit. This is strictly forbidden once you release it. The arbiters miss it, the game continues, and he wins. Years later, slow-motion footage proves he let go of the piece.
  • After years of tension, Judit finally beats Kasparov in 2002 (Russia vs. the World) in just 42 moves. She became the first woman ever to defeat a reigning or former world champion in a classical game.

Ratings:

  • My Rating: 91/100
  • IMDB Rating: 7.6/10
  • Rotten Tomatoes Ratings: 92/100 (Users); 88/100 (Critics)

Director’s Note: This doc is directed by Rory Kennedy. It leans on archival match footage, TV broadcasts, and home video from the Polgár family. It also digs into the experiment run by her father, László Polgár, who believed geniuses are made—not born—and set out to prove it using chess as the test case.

Release Date: 2026 (Netflix)

Other Unique Stuff

  • Judit kept detailed handwritten notebooks of opening prep as a kid. She was building her own personal “chess database” years before engines and software became standard.
  • The doc shows how she would study opponents psychologically, not just technically. She would target specific habits (like time pressure mistakes) the same way poker players profile rivals.

Wrap Up:

“Queen of Chess” is part sports doc, part parenting experiment, and part long revenge arc against the greatest player ever. If you like underdog stories with actual receipts, this one delivers.
